Short cycling means the furnace runs for only a few minutes, shuts off, and starts again without ever reaching temperature. The most common chain is a clogged filter restricting airflow, heat building up at the heat exchanger, and the high-limit switch opening to protect it. Change the filter and open the vents first. If short cycling continues on a clean filter, a technician needs to measure airflow and test the blower, inducer, sensors, and controls.
Short cycling wastes fuel, leaves rooms cold, and stresses the heat exchanger, because the unit is repeatedly heating up and shutting down on a safety device. The safety device is doing its job — the answer is to find why it is tripping, not to defeat it. In most homes the answer starts with airflow, and the checks below take a few minutes.

Clogged filter and airflow. Restricted airflow lets heat build up at the heat exchanger until the high-limit switch opens. This is by far the most discussed cause.
Closed or blocked vents. Closed supply registers, blocked returns, and a dirty blower wheel all restrict the same airflow.
Flame sensor and thermostat. A dirty flame sensor can drop the burner out early, and a thermostat placed in sunlight, near a heat source, or miswired can satisfy too soon.
Sizing and venting. An oversized furnace heats the space too fast and satisfies the thermostat in short bursts. A blocked vent or failing inducer and pressure switch can produce the same pattern.
A yearly tune-up before winter is how short cycling is usually caught early — filters, airflow, ignition, and safety controls are checked before the first prolonged freeze, when a failing unit is under the most strain.
A technician measures airflow and temperature rise, checks the blower and inducer, tests the flame sensor and safety switches, and looks at thermostat wiring and placement. If the furnace is oversized for the home, that is explained honestly, with the options that follow from it.

It is a safety device doing its job, but leaving it running stresses the heat exchanger and can speed up cracking. Fix the airflow cause, and call if it continues on a clean filter.
Cycles vary by home and weather, but repeated cycles of only a few minutes that never reach setpoint are a fault pattern, not normal operation.
Yes. A thermostat in sunlight, near a heat source, with wrong settings, or miswired can satisfy too soon and start short cycles. Settings and placement are part of the safe checks.
